The new software package Smartpick 6000 from Kardex Remstar supports time- and resource-saving order picking strategies in conjunction with horizontal carousels. If several automated horizontal carousels are combined into one zone, this can greatly improve order picking performance.

Combining several horizontal carousels can greatly enhance order picking performance.Typically two to four units are combined into one order picking station which usually only requires a single operator. Depending on the layout of the system and the strategies employed, several thousand order lines can be picked by one warehouse worker per shift. A number of different layouts are possible depending on the dimensions of the premises.
The horizontal carousels can either be set up as a double station with access openings which are rectangular to one another; in the case of great product mix depth with high access frequency, the system can be organized as an L-shaped triple or quadruple station or as a multilevel system. The L-shape considerably shortens the order picking routes, as the access openings at the front are close to each other.The horizontal carousels work simultaneously. This avoids unproductive waiting times for the staff. With Smartpick 6000 itis even possible to build zones within a unit – for example when access is to be restricted to specific stored goods.

The various order items are automated for the picker and supplied based on the“goods to person” principle. Horizontal carousels reduce the order picking travel time – which takes up no less than 65 percent of the total order picking time – by up to 85 percent compared to static systems.

Order picking strategies which involve the aid of Smartpick 6000, such as batch picking and multiuser picking, speed up the process even more. In batch picking, several orders are consolidated into one batch. Consequently, only one pick is necessary, after which the various order items are allocated to the individual orders. In multiuser picking, every operator is assigned one color. As a result, several operators can work at the same order picking station. Further strategies supported by Smartpick 6000 are pick-to-clear and put-to-fill. The purpose of both is to concentrate items at specific storage places in order to save room and reduce retrieval time. Smartpick 6000 achieves additional efficiency when visual indicator elements at the carousels and the order picking place areused. This can lead to a picking accuracy of over 99 percent.
